It’s the perfect combination of meat and spices. The iconic Scandinavian flavour people love. This recipe is simple enough for a weeknight but special enough to serve for Sunday dinner, holidays, or entertaining.

Serve them over mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, rice, or even with lingonberry jam for a traditional Swedish touch.

How To Make Swedish Meatballs

Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • ½ lb (225 g) ground pork
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon allspice
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter, for frying

Creamy Gravy

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional but recommended)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

1. Make the Meatballs

Combine the breadcrumbs and milk in a bowl and let them soak for 2–3 minutes.

Add the ground beef, ground pork, onion, egg, garlic powder, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.

Mix gently until just combined—over-mixing can make the meatballs tough.

Roll the mixture into 1–1½ inch meatballs.

2. Brown the Meatballs

Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add the meatballs in batches and brown them on all sides. They don’t need to be fully cooked yet.

Transfer browned meatballs to a plate and repeat with the remaining batches.

3. Make the Gravy

In the same skillet, melt the butter.

Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes until lightly golden.

Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking to create a smooth sauce.

Stir in the cream, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard.

Simmer for 3–5 minutes until the gravy thickens.

4. Finish the Dish

Return the meatballs to the skillet.

Simmer for 7–10 minutes until the meatballs are fully cooked, and the sauce is rich and creamy.

Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.

Why You’ll Love Swedish Meatballs

  • The perfect texture: Soft, juicy meatballs thanks to the breadcrumb-and-milk mixture (panade).
  • Classic flavour: Balanced seasoning with nutmeg and allspice gives them the authentic Swedish taste.
  • Comfort food made easy: A 45-minute dinner that tastes like it slow-simmered all day.
  • Flexible: Serve over potatoes, noodles, or rice.
  • Crowd-pleasing: Suitable for family dinners, holidays, or meal prep.

Tips

  • Don’t overmix the meat—it toughens the meatballs.
  • Brown in batches so the pan doesn’t crowd and the meatballs get a good colour.
  • Use heavy cream for the best texture; half-and-half works but won’t be as rich.
  • If the gravy becomes too thick, thin it with a splash of broth.
  • For extra flavour, sauté the onions for the meatballs before adding them to the mixture.
